First, I recently discovered this site in one of my internet searches for compact tractor dealers and associated specification info and have found it to be EXTREMELY helpful. Thanks to all who have provided detailed information about their experiences associated with all makes/models of compact tractors. My question follows: We have 4 acres of land in rural north-eastern pennsylvania. It is relatively flat, has a 75' driveway, and we currently mow 1.5 acres of it with a 14hp MTD lawn tractor. We remove snowfall either by hand (great excercise, yet time consuming) or by old 7 1/2hp craftsman snow thrower. We also do alot of our own landscaping (moving dirt, mulch, stone, etc.) all with shovels and cart behind MTD. We want a compact tractor that can accomodate a belly mower (60in. min.), front end loader, backhoe, tiller, post hole digger, and front end plow/snowthrower. I have begun to assess several tractors based upon this criteria: min. of 25hp at PTO and hydrostatic. I have found the new 4000 series to be comfortable but pricey and too much fiberglass/plastic. I felt that a 955 would fit well and like the 790 with exception of no hydrostatic. Am I too harsh by rejecting all non-hydrostatic? I've driven (mow, plow snow) my neighboor's JD318 several times and loved the hydrostatic on it. The 790 seems like it has a very fair/economical price (new - $11,900 w/ mid PTO) I have also located a used 955 with 72" belly mower with 160hrs. for $16,500. I wondered if the 955 price was on the high side? Dealer said 955 new checked in at 18,000 1 1/2yrs. ago. Any advice here?

Paul; Need to know more about the 955 to give you a rough guess. Is the mower the only attachment? Is it 4WD or 2? As far as Hydro, it IS the way to go. Its a must for mowing and loader work.David ....

Sounds like a $30,000 tractor in your future,(when you consider base price of a 30 horse, hydro, plus implements) maybe the 955 is a good deal based on what you want to do, or money.I put alot of thougt into my own HP requirements, I went minimum of 20 gross HP, how did you reach the 25 PTO HP requirement?My thoughts on hydro - YES YES YESCDF ....

The 955 in question has only a mower included and bracket for attaching front end loader, but no loader. It is 4WD and hydrostatic. ....

Paul,I have a flat 2 1/2 acre piece of property that is half pasture and half home with lawn. Two years ago I went through the agony of having to decide between JD gear drive and hydrostatic. I bought the 755 hydrostatic and have never regretted the decision. The gear drive (770) was less money but it wasn't what I really wanted. For my purposes the hdro is superior for operations requiring the loader (lots of direction changes) and the hydraulic system is great for driving the backhoe. Regardless of what you decide, my advice is to buy the one you want --- you'll have it a long time. Good luck, Frank Bankes ....

I have the 790 John Deere tractor with Front end loader and 5 foot finish mower and 6 foot back blade. Loader is John Deere and other impliments are Land Pride. 790 4WD with turf tires. I paid $15,800 delivered and feel it was a good price for the package. I priced Kubotas L2500 L3010 and B 2710, also New Holland TD 25 and TD 29 and all of the Massey Furgenson series. I looked at and drove a lot of equipmend. I settled on the 790 because of size and price. I was dead set on the Kubote L3010. I have a friend that owns the Dealership for kubotas and gave me a knock your socks off price, I just felt that the 790 was better suited to my needs. I have 6 acre's to mow and a 600 foot drive to take care of. I live in south eastern Mich and we get a fair amount of snow and ice. If you have a drain field as I do you also need to consider the weight of the unit you are going to buy. ....
